Brazil's food delivery market sees new developments as 99Food returns to São Paulo

According to Brazilian media reports, 99Food, the food delivery arm of 99, announced its return to the São Paulo market on Monday (the 12th) of this week. Users in the metropolitan area have already spotted a newly added tab in the app, specifically for placing orders at bars and restaurants.

According to 99food, the company's business is built on 20,000 registered merchants and 50,000 motorcycle riders. This return to the food delivery market not only carries a strong anti-monopoly objective — clearly a challenge to industry leader iFood — but also introduces a policy of waiving all commissions and monthly fees for restaurants. Following testing and validation in Goiânia, São Paulo marks the second location outside 99Food's home state where the company has launched its operations.

"We believe we will expand rapidly to more cities. Our goal is to cover over 100 cities by the beginning of next year," said Simeng Wang, General Manager of 99, at a press conference in São Paulo.

Previously, its Chinese parent company Didi has committed to injecting 1 billion Brazilian reals into 99 food, of which 500 million reals will be allocated to operations in São Paulo. These funds will be used for technology development, discount vouchers, as well as covering payments to and incentives for its partner delivery riders.
